Known as
'the bread-basket of France',
the Berry
region is known for its dramatic, unspoilt
landscapes,
its
traditional, laid-back attitude and its
delicious and plentiful produce.
Examples of
what makes the Berry famous can be found all around
Massay.
Spend a
lazy morning gathering your picnic lunch.
Visit the
local goat farm with the chateau in the back
garden, for creamy cheese, buy fresh milk
straight from the cow, honey from the bee man
known for his obsession with perfect
vintage cars and wine from the numerous local
growers.
And that's
before you even start on the
markets........
vignerons.
Sans parler des
marchés…

La
famille Chipault has been farming just outside
Massay at 'La Ferriere' since 1914, and on
arrival at their pretty stone farm house, you
would be forgiven for thinking that little has
changed over the years.
Having
nonchalontly grown up with a small but
flamboyant chateau in their back garden, the
laid-back proprietors are happy to introduce you
to their herd of jolly goats. They must be
the only goats to smell of sweet hay and not....
goat. They're gorgeous!
Creamy white
goats cheese and fresh, free-range eggs can be
purchased from inside one of the many rustic
barns. The eggs are incomparable to the
things you buy in the average supermarket and
the cheese is very of the Berry and absolutely
delicious!
rien n’a changé depuis.
!

Massay
dairy farmers, Helene and Francois Jourdan take
pride in the health and welfare of their herd of
cows and have won numerous
accolades.
Enjoy the
taste of raw milk straight from Massay cows in
your cafe creme. You'll find it difficult
to go back to pasturised.

Reuilly and Quincy are famous for
their white, rose and red wines. There are
numerous growers and sellers just a few
kilometres away from Massay.
Tastings can be a great experience and are
easily organised.
Other local
wines are Sancerre, Pouilly Fume and
Touraine.

Nicole, Gilbert and Franck Bonnet have a
beautiful Berry farm where they have a little
honey museum which shows different styles of
beehives from all over France.
They are
happy to offer honey tastings of up to 12
different types of honey. Our two
favourites are heather and chestnut
honey.
They also
make and sell honey wine, royal jelly and other
products.

Traditional oak framed house building,
using largely reclaimed materials is alive and
well in the Berry.
The project
seen here under construction is ten minutes
drive from Massay Gites and is being undertaken
by a team of master craftsmen who we can put you
in contact with should you be interested in
building a house in this area.
